Paediatric Surgery ST3: All You Need to Know
Applying for Paediatric Surgery ST3 in 2026-2027? This guide breaks down the key dates, eligibility criteria, self-assessment, interview format, and offers process in one place.
Paediatric Surgery ST3 is a highly competitive national recruitment process, and success depends on much more than simply submitting an application. You need to understand the timeline, meet every eligibility requirement, score well in self-assessment, and perform strongly at interview.
This Prepsurg guide summarises the most important parts of the 2026 applicant handbook so you can focus your preparation where it matters most.
Key Dates
- Applications open: Thursday 20 November 2025 at 10am
- Application deadline: Thursday 11 December 2025 at 4pm
- Self-assessment evidence upload window: 14 to 21 January 2026
- Interviews: 30 and 31 March 2026
- Initial offers released by: Tuesday 14 April 2026 by 5pm
- Holding deadline: Wednesday 22 April 2026 at 1pm
- Upgrade deadline: Thursday 23 April 2026 at 1pm
Application
Applications are submitted through Oriel only. Once submitted, only your personal details and referee details can be changed, so it is important to review everything carefully before pressing submit.
The application includes self-assessment questions, and your answers must later be supported with evidence. That evidence must be clearly identifiable and uploaded during the evidence submission window. If your evidence does not support your claimed score, your score may be reduced.
Any false or misleading claim, or submission of documents containing patient-identifiable information, may trigger a Probity Panel.
Eligibility
Before anything else, make sure you actually meet the eligibility criteria. Common reasons for exclusion include missing documents or incorrect assumptions about core competency evidence.
- Full GMC registration at the time of application
- A current licence to practise by the time the post starts
- MRCS completed by the offers release date
- CT1 and CT2 competencies in core surgery by the time of appointment
- Right to work in the UK as a doctor in training
- Full employment history since primary medical qualification, including explanations for gaps over four weeks
Core Competency Evidence
The exact evidence you need depends on your background:
- If you are currently in UK or Irish Core Surgical Training, you usually do not need to upload additional competency evidence at application stage.
- If you have previously completed UK or Irish Core Surgical Training, you need to upload your Core Training Certificate or relevant ARCP outcomes.
- All other applicants will need an Alternative Certificate of Eligibility to Enter Higher Surgical Training, or the accepted equivalent form.
If you fail to submit competency evidence when required, you may be longlisted out of the process.
Shortlisting and Self-Assessment
The handbook states a minimum self-assessment cut-off score of 12. However, that is only the minimum threshold, not the score you should aim for.
Shortlisting is based on your validated self-assessment score, with the highest-scoring applicants invited to interview. If application numbers are very high, candidates far below the likely interview cut-off may be withdrawn early.
In practice, your strategy should be to maximise every verifiable domain and make your evidence easy for the assessors to follow.
Interview Format
Interviews will be conducted online via Qpercom VIDs. The published slot length is 100 minutes, which includes pre-interview checks and contingency time. The interview itself lasts 70 minutes.
There are four stations, each with 5 minutes reading time beforehand:
Career Progression
Your training journey, experience, and overall development.
Academic Station
Academic achievements, critical thinking, and likely presentation preparation.
Clinical Station
A clinical scenario assessing judgement, prioritisation, and management.
CARE Communication Station
Communication with a patient, parent, or carer in a simulated scenario.
The CARE station is being piloted in 2026. Candidates will be scored for it, but the score will not count towards the final interview score.
Candidates may bring paper notes only, and these must be their own. Notes should not be shared after the interview.
Scoring and Appointability
- Maximum overall score including self-assessment: 295
- Maximum interview score: 264
- Career Progression maximum: 64
- Academic maximum: 100
- Clinical maximum: 100
- Minimum overall appointability score: 178
In the event of tied overall scores, ranking is determined by:
- Clinical Station
- Career Progression Station
- Academic Station
Offers and Preferencing
Applicants will be asked to rank programme preferences in Oriel. Preferencing may open after interviews, and you can continue updating your order during the offers process.
Once an offer is made, you have 48 hours to respond, excluding weekends but not bank holidays. You may choose to accept, reject, or hold the offer.
Remember that an offer through national recruitment is an offer of allocation to a training programme, not yet a formal offer of employment.
Prepsurg Takeaway
The candidates who do well in ST3 recruitment are usually not the ones who start revising the week before interview. They are the ones who understand the process early, gather evidence properly, optimise their self-assessment score, and practise the style of answers expected in each station.
Start early. Map your evidence carefully. Prepare for all scored domains. Treat this as a process that rewards organisation just as much as talent.
